Fall Weather Safety Tips
Fall is a wonderful time of year, but it does have its share of hazards. Read our safety tips to be prepared this season.

Why We Love Fall

Fall is a special season: the leaves are changing, kids are back to school, there’s football to watch, apples to pick (and eat!), pumpkins to carve, and the weather is especially pleasant. It's cooler, with lower humidity, fewer bugs, and better sleeping temperatures. But, it’s not without its risks, so here's how you can stay safe during these colorful months.

Leaf Hazards

While the fall leaves are beautiful, they can create hazards for motorists. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Slippery Roads: Wet fallen leaves can create very slick conditions on roadways. When combined with freezing temperatures, it can feel like driving on ice!

  • Obstructed Visibility: Leaves can cover road markings like double yellow lines and deep potholes. Slow down on leaf-covered roads and give yourself plenty of space between you and other vehicles.

  • Child Safety: Kids love playing in leaf piles, so always be cautious while driving through residential areas. Never drive through a pile of leaves!

  • Windshield Check: Leaves can obstruct your car’s view. Keep your windshield clear and check under the hood for dried leaves that might block ventilation holes.

Reduced Visibility

As days get shorter, visibility can be a real challenge. Be extra careful during these times:

  • Dusk and Fog: School is in session, and many people walk along the road with pets, kids, or on bikes. Mornings often bring fog, which can reduce visibility further.

  • Wildlife: Fall is the time when deer and other wildlife are more active. Stay alert, especially on curvy roads.

  • Obey Speed Limits: Especially near school zones and areas where animal crossings are posted. Slow down and stay safe!

Be Prepared for Weather Changes

Hiking in the fall is fantastic, but weather conditions can change quickly:

  • Layers are Key: It may be sunny at the base of the mountain but cold, rainy, or even snowy at the summit. Dress in layers and bring a waterproof shell and extra water.

  • Never Hike Alone: If you’re venturing out, it’s safer to bring a buddy along. It’s always better to have someone with you in case of emergency.

Water Safety

For those who love fall boat rides, keep these tips in mind:

  • Life Jackets are a Must: Hypothermia can happen even if the weather seems mild. Always wear a life jacket.

  • Even Strong Swimmers Can Be Weakened: Cold water can drain your energy fast. Stay safe by wearing protective gear.

Maintenance Tips for Fall Safety

  1. Get Your Furnace Serviced: Before winter arrives, have a professional inspect and clean your furnace. It’s one of the most important appliances in your home.

  2. Check Smoke and CO Detectors: When you "fall back" for daylight savings, replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, ensure you have a working fire extinguisher and that everyone in your house knows how to use it.

  3. Fire Safety: Don't leave candles unattended, especially in Jack-O-Lanterns or centerpieces. Be cautious with outdoor fires—flying embers can spread and start fires.

  4. Chimney Maintenance: Before lighting your first fire of the season, hire a chimney sweep to clean out debris, and always use fireplace screens to catch sparks.

Stay Safe & Enjoy Fall!

By staying alert and prepared, you can fully enjoy all the beauty and fun fall has to offer. Happy Fall, and stay safe!
